I have emailed to Shivnath Shaw (shiv4u@gmail.com)
Dear Shivnath,
Hi
I saw some of the pages you created in iitwiki.
I have some advice to make while naming the pages.
In your gusto and over entusiasm you have forgone the normal norms that Photo Gallary should have been Shivnath shaw:Photo Gallary.
Important Links should have been …./index.php/Shivnathshaw:Important link etc etc
The common pages are public property.
I hope you understand the spirit of the IITWIKI and avoid any encroachment on the general space.
Anyway carry on with right page naming .

April 30th, 2007 - Nikit Phadke
Hi there everyone,
This is Nikit from Y1 batch. I wanna startoff on a lighter note by commending everybody behind iitkwiki. It looks great and is easy to use.
I am pretty sure most of us are keeping track of whats happening within our beloved campus. a number of new developments have taken place after we left the campus. some positive and some not so positive . But none of those compare to the increasing number of suicides taking place within the campus. The recent suicide by J.bharadwaja http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=233664
is one the many cases of suicides that have taken place in our campus during the recent times. I think this is a very serious problem and something concrete must be done in the direction so as to prevent the recurrence of such unfortunate events. I dont know what steps the institute has taken in the direction but some brain storming by the alumnis would definitely help.

Squash courts are conspicuous by there absence in iitk. By surprise, although other games facilities are there, this is a sport which is also not offered as cumpulsory sport in 1st year. Any squash enthusiast in iitk, current batches?

I suggest in ”Hot in Nation Building”, we have a set of articles, which obviously will evolve over time, which represent the cummulative thinking of IITK Alumni, students and faculty. Of course, a disclaimer should state that this is not the view of IITK Admin. Since, anyone can edit these pages, a certain etiquette needs to be maintained. the list of topics can include anything from as Rahul Mehrotra suggested “sports building”, to “economics” to “music” or how to get bollywood movies to be more exciting!
We could also change the title on the main page from “Hot in Nation Building” to “IITK Alumni Think Tank” to give it a more serious feel.

Friends - this is a serious question? Looking for any strategies we can follow so that in 10 to 20 years, we may be able to get a few more olympic medals and have a few other faces on ads other than cricketers and bollywood celebrities.

I agree with the view of Charanjit.
One justification for executing this view is, to find visual story of IIT Kanpur from
“First batch-to-Recent one”.
One more thing, that I would like to add up is any multimedia data, which is socially sharable
(”according to IIT society :>”), for e.g. (audio, static-pels, moving pels), can be linked to this
global platform, which is suggested by Charanjit.
Thanks,
-rawat

Where? How? Abuse? Over-usage?
I suggest a page per alumni-year. Also, viewers should be able to rate the photos from 1 to 10 (I wonder if this can be implemented in Wiki….traditionally it is more of a blog feature).
Then, we can have a global page, where the most highly rated photos are displayed.
Please discuss.

January 26th, 2007 - MANU KUMAR BANSAL
Hi,
I’m very excited about the iitkwiki. I’m telling the truth in saying that yesterday only (wrt this post) I was looking for something like a personal wiki page for my home page. The closest and most useful thing I got was Google docs, which, combined with a cute frame trick, gave me what I wanted - a completely web-editable web-page within the name space of home.iitk. Have a look at http://home.iitk.ac.in/~manub to see what I’m talking about.
And just the next day I learnt about iitkwiki. I’d surely prefer it over Google docs, because it’s a dedicated iitk portal, and because I like wiki’s. I’ve a dokuwiki in my iitk webspace, and two student club website on mediawiki - check out a cool look at http://students.iitk.ac.in/crescentsun.
But the biggest disappointment came on realizing that user pages are world-editable. That makes them almost useless. On reading about page protection, I found that mediawiki, in accordance with the Philosophy, keeps user pages also community editable, with certain Conventions. But there are extensions, and other wikis that enable per-user pages. Please try to make the user pages protected per-user, otherwise I see the whole idea collapsing.
Thanks,
Manu.
